Too
many politicians are out of touch with the day-to-day workings of
American life. They refuse to acknowledge that financial concerns loom
over our hopes and dreams and influence nearly every decision we make.
I've never been rich, but I've never been in poverty either; I've
always been working, just on the cusp. I believe my life is like that
of most Americans--I have no health insurance, I have a mountain of
debt, and I live pay check to pay check. But, like most Americans, I
believe with absolute certainty that things will get better for me, my
family, my friends, and my community if I just keep working at it.
The
Declaration of Independence claims life, liberty and the pursuit
of happiness as the rights of all. Therefore, it is the responsibility
of our government of citizens to ensure that any inequality is set
right. The current Congress has created a climate of fear
where wit is proscribed, learning despised, enquiry detested, and only
hypocrisy encouraged. We deserve better. You deserve a Representative
who will always stand against inequity and not just when it's
politically convenient.
I
believe in peace and nonviolence, I believe that the government should
be there to catch us when we stumble and fall, I believe in securing
our environmental safety for generations to come, I believe in doing
our fair share, and I believe that no one, rich or powerful, is above
the law.
I
want to serve my community. As your Representative to Congress I will
bring a real world understanding to the formation of laws. Because I am
a Green, I will never trade your well-being against future political or
personal gain. Because I am a teacher, I'll strive to help everyone
reach their full potential in their own way. As a poet, I believe in a
world where what benefits all will equally benefit the one. As an
American, I will fight to maintain our freedoms and live up to our
responsibilities.
