Who is Calvin Nicholson?
Calvin L. Nicholson was born at Yale New Haven Hospital in 1978. He is a life-long resident of the Newhallville neighborhood and a product of the New Haven Public Schools — graduating from Wilbur Cross High School in 1996. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Physics from Yale University in 2000. He currently works as a computer systems developer in Fairfield County.
Why is Calvin Nicholson Running for Registrar of Voters in New Haven?
The Office of the Registrar of Voters is an important elected position in the State of Connecticut. As department heads in their respective towns, Registrars
- Develop various methods and procedures to ensure the voting rights of citizens;
- Administer all elections: national, state, municipal, and primaries;
- Are responsible for voter education and organizing the annual canvass of electors;
- Maintain and update files, prepare department budgets, and train election officials; and
- Ensure the proper maintenance of all voting machines.
Why should I vote for Calvin for Registrar?
A vote for Calvin Nicholson is a vote for:
- Education—Calvin wants to help youth learn the power in voting and assist ex-felons in reclaiming their voting rights.

What chance does Calvin have to be elected Registrar of Voters?
To be elected as the Green Party candidate for Registrar of Voters in the City of New Haven, Calvin must receive more votes than the Republican candidate. However, in this race, the Green candidate cannot be a “spoiler.”
The Connecticut General Statutes require the election of candidates from two different political parties. If Calvin, as the Green Party candidate, outpolls the Republican Party candidate, both Calvin and the Democratic Party candidate will be elected to the office of Registrar of Voters. According to Connecticut General Statutes, Sec. 9-190:
The candidate having the highest number of votes and the candidate having the next highest number of votes for the office of registrar of voters, who does not belong to the same political party as the candidate having the highest number, shall be declared elected registrars of voters…
Moreover,
even if Calvin wins by getting more votes than the Republican, the
Republican candidate still wins, because Connecticut General Statutes,
Sec. 9-190, also provides that: if the candidate for registrar of
voters of a major party is not one of the registrars so elected, such
candidate of such major party shall also be declared elected registrar
of voters.
So, If Calvin wins, New Haven will have three Registrars.
