  • COMPREHENSIVE LAND USE PLANNING TO AVOID SPRAWL.
Citizens in Canton, Avon, Granby and surrounding towns have been forced to wage battles against chain stores and large housing developments with increasing frequency over the past few years. We must learn to integrate the ecological principles of sustainability into public policies for managing growth. New and innovative approaches, such as Smart Growth concepts, are emerging; approaches that allow communities, not developers, to take charge of their future.
  • PROPERTY AND INCOME TAX RELIEF.
A new approach to taxation is emerging throughout Europe and in states such as Vermont and Minnesota. This new approach calls for a change of perspective regarding what we tax and why. Activities that cause pollution or damage natural resources would be taxed more so that activities essential to the long-term health of the economy-work, education, investment-could be taxed less. Let's begin this exciting debate here in Connecticut!
  • AN END TO CORPORATE WELFARE.
While the needs of the people continue to be ignored, our state legislature continues to give huge subsidies, tax breaks, and bailouts to corporations. Currently, two thirds of Connecticut's corporations pay only $250 in corporate income tax and 2,100 big businesses don't pay any taxes at all. Meanwhile, citizens are being forced to pay for the squandering of $220 million of taxpayer money by CRRA officials.
  • SINGLE PAYER UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE.
According to the government's own studies, universal health care reforms will save $2 billion for Connecticut citizens. Such reforms would provide every Connecticut citizen with medical care, including long-term care and prescription drug coverage.
  • A STATEWIDE ENERGY POLICY.
We need rapid development of clean mass transit and an Energy Policy that supports conservation, clean, renewable energy and municipally owned-and-operated utilities.
  • COMPREHENSIVE CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM!
Once and for all, let's get big money out of our elections by instituting a system of public financing for campaigns.
