Former New York Green Candidate to Speak in Portland

Howie Hawkins of Syracuse will address state Green Party

PORTLAND, CT--Howie Hawkins, a leader of the New York State Green Party, will speak on the topic of "Eco-Socialism and Independent Politics" at the Portland, CT, Senior Center on Saturday, March 3. Hawkins ran twice as the Green Party candidate for New York governor, winning nearly 60,000 votes in 2010 and over 180,000 votes in 2014. Last year he ran for mayor of Syracuse.

The event will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 PM and is free to the public. Green Party merchandise will be available for sale, and there will be an opportunity to meet some of the Connecticut Green candidates running in 2018.

Hawkins' 2017 mayoral campaign was based on a platform of fiscal, economic, and ecological sustainability. For example, he advocated for a progressive income tax, gun safety, and community-owned enterprises. In the end, he received more votes than the Republican candidate.

In his campaigns for governor, among the issues he supported were the creation of a state bank, sustainable agriculture including industrial hemp, and a digital infrastructure of municipal high-speed Internet service.

Before entering electoral politics, Hawkins was involved in many peace, labor, and cooperative movements. He is active in the Teamsters union. He is also the author of Independent Politics: The Green Party Strategy Debate.
